Email sent to students during Spring Break

Dear Class of 2004

This is ‘homework’ !
Since our time is limited in the next few months (as it has been for some of you strangers in Friday's Techno.09 classes…) I thought I would give you a ‘heads up’ to prepare and bring your imaginative ideas to class on your return from spring break.

1.

The Assignment
The last part of this semester will be devoted to digital storytelling. Your final project will be a 3 to 5 minute digital movie incorporating still images (webfound, scanned, or created in Photoshop), a scripted voice-over to be recorded as part of the soundtrack along with music, you may choose.

2.

Getting started : Choosing a good story to tell
There are several steps to creating a good movie which we will cover in class. First and foremost, you will want to start with a strong foundation: your script. You can brainstorm on this outside of class, so below are some ideas to jump-start your imagination.

Your story can be about a person in your life, an event that was quite memorable, a favorite place you have been, a family (bedtime?) story you have been told
OR
a poem you have written, a fictional story or non-fictional paper of your own writing, lyrics you have written, narration of an expanded version of your tutorial
OR
your solution to one of society’s problems, helpful advice about some truth you have learned in life, your prediction of what the future will look like, a dream you’ve had

You have written short biographies or accounts of the retreat at Camp Caz. You’ve put together a tutorial that put steps in sequential order and used images to illustrate the text. The digital story is a similar type of writing in that your story/script must have a beginning, middle and end. A good story has a point of view, a conclusive statement, or even a punchline.

3.

Due dates and deadlines for this project
Because of the limited time we have in class each week, I will encourage you to plan ahead and come to class prepared. Each deadline will be a portion of your final grade. Miss a deadline and your grade will suffer. The script of your story is just the beginning*.

You will need to submit your finished script for my approval via email or hand me a hard copy before April 27!
prior to recording it as your voice-over. In the meantime, you can gather the imagery you need to illustrate your story. This may be a consideration in your choice of story if you have an abundance of photographs, drawings or visual ideas that can help to tell it.

*The next step is storyboarding or planning which images you will match up with your voice-over/script.

Don’t hesitate to write several drafts, practice reading/telling your story to family or friends, stretch your creativity and imagination to its limits.

Yours so very truly, Jeannene
