Assignment Commentary: This was a science project I did with my friend Lauren Finston last year. I was inspired to make a pinhole camera because my father is a photographer and I thought it would be fun to share his passion. Making the camera took a few days; first we had to carefully measure and cut 5 pieces of wood planks. We had to make a cube hole in the front piece, then we placed a thin sheet of brass with a small pinhole punctured in the middle ( hence the name pinhole camera). We left the back side open in order to place the Polaroid back (object used to place film in and take out). Filming was a lot more complicated than simply pressing a button. Lauren and I shared the job of holding the camera as still as possible, and the other, placing and removing their finger from the pinhole ( on the brass sheet), letting light in the camera to expose the film. The extent of time we left the pinhole open depended on the amount of sun, where we were, and the direction the camera was pointed. Some of our pictures came out black/too dark, white/ too light or just right.

Below is a picture of the camera we made and next to it is an example of a picture we took (Joshua Tree in Palm Springs)
