Portofino by Frank Schaeffer
292 pages
This is one of my favorite
books of all time (I have about 20 others). This may sound really corny
but I read it once a year. When you read it, it's like taking a vacation,
which is what this book's about. There's never a dull moment, and it is
one of the most hilarious books I have ever read. This is a great story
to read while on a vacation, but be warned: after reading about Calvin
and his missionary family in Italy, you might be glad your family is so
normal, or cheated since your family is so boring compared to his. Whatever
you feel about it, I promise you that you WILL ENJOY THIS BOOK!!! So,
you want a bit of a summary? Every year, Calvin Becker and his missionary
family go to Portofino for vacation. Calvin's main attitude towards his
family is basically summed up in this quote: "Some kids I met told lies
to be special. I told lies to be normal". This collection of past and
present experiences in Portofino is a coming-of-age story that's laugh-out-loud
funny.
